Abstract

The negative effects of consanguineous marriages are well documented and are usually in genetic diseases, in which a percentage of cases died. A literature review was conducted in order to document the presence of consanguinity in different European monarchies and its relationship with different genetic diseases. Consanguinity in the Spanish Royal family is documented, which caused the extinction of that family. Another example was the Victoria Queen of England, who transmitted hemophilia to several dynasties, such as British, Prussian, Spanish and Russian; this disease at the end of XIX century hemophilia was known as "The Royal Disease". The type of hemophilia transmitted in diferent European dynasties was never identified; but recent anthropological and molecular genetic studies allowed determine it was type B of hemophilia.
