Abstract

Gingival enlargement is the most common name for acute or chronic gum pathological growth. Clinically, the main features observed are increased volume, occasionally discoloration and may manifest as hyperplasias that affect the gingival tissue. T his pathology can be caused by a variety of etiological factors such as inflammation, drugs, hormonal changes, specific traumas, systemic diseases, vitamin deficiency, pregnancy or being associated with orthodontic treatment. A systematic search of the literature was performed using different electronic databases such as: PubMed, Imbiomed and Scielo, the keywords used in the search were gingival enlargement", "gingival hyperplasia", "hyperplastic gingivitis", "gingival overgrowth" all the literature obtained was selected that contributed to the objective of the work. In this article, we intend to collect all the necessary information to identify and highlight the etiology and the different factors that contribute to its development as well as the clinical and alternative treatment manifestations.
