Abstract

Fever is the abnormal elevation of body temperature, which is caused by an imbalance between production and removal of heat causing an adaptive response; it is also a common manifestation of infectious diseases. Fever of unknown origin is defined as fever rectal 38 0 C or more in a child younger than 36 months, in which the etiology of fever was not identified after a history and detailed physical examination, in pictures of minors 72 hours of evolution.

We performed a retrospective, descriptive, analytical and cross study that includes all children less than 36 months of age, admitted to the Pediatric Service of the Hospital La Paz, between the periods of 2008 to 2011, with the aim of determining the prevalence of presentation of fever without source.

lt was determined that the presentation of fever of unknown origin was between 13 to 24 months for males, and between 0-12 months for females. In addition to the most common cause of occurrence of this disease is urinary tract infection, this case is also linked to the risk factors to which the child is predisposed. The most vulnerable children were those who were living in precarious situations along with a poor diet and hygiene.

In the present work we determine that can be considered the fever of unknown origin as a conclusive sign for the expression of infection that can establish the diagnosis of a common disease in children less than 36 months, and is thus the urinary tract infection.
