Information and analgesic self-medication in patients at Univalle Dental Clinic – Cochabamba, 2019

Introduction: To improve the oral health of the population, the care of university dental services must be optimized with the development of activities for the promotion, education, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the main oral diseases. Currently self-medication is a very frequent practice for social, economic, or cultural reasons.
Objective: To analyze the relationship between information and self-medication with analgesics in patients who attended the Univalle Dental Clinic in Cochabamba during the months of September to November 2019.
Methodology: A descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional research simple random probabilistic, 169 patients were included, survey-type questionnaires were conducted to collect data that were processed in the statistical program IBM® SPSS® Statistics 20.
Results: It was evidenced that 53,8% of the patients self-medicated before attending the Univalle Dental Clinic; 59,2% did not receive information about the medication.
Conclusion: The lack of information and analgesic self-medication is frequent in patients who requested dental care, this can bring negative consequences and adverse effects that can affect their oral and general health. Patients should be made aware of the importance of self-medication with analgesics.
