El suelo es la base de la seguridad alimentaria, pero también la piedra angular de la salud biológica en la Tierra, un suelo sano es un requisito previo para una vida sana. El Servicio de Conservación de Recursos Naturales del Departamento de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos define la salud del suelo como la capacidad continua del suelo para servir como un ecosistema biológico importante para el sustento de plantas, animales y seres humanos.
En el Grado de Calidad de la Tierra Cultivada de China (GB/T 33469-2016), la salud del suelo se define como la capacidad continua del suelo para mantener su función como un sistema vivo dinámico, principalmente a través de la capacidad de limpieza del suelo y la biodiversidad.
