Recientemente, las aplicaciones emergentes de la biotecnología microbiana han demostrado el potencial para resolver algunos de los desafíos globales, como el cambio climático, así como para proporcionar una fuente de materia prima producida de manera sostenible para el desarrollo de productos. Las aplicaciones potenciales de estos microbios varían desde biofertilizantes en la agricultura hasta métodos avanzados de tratamiento en tecnologías de aguas residuales. Las aplicaciones de estos contenidos y procesos microbianos se han encontrado en la industria nutracéutica, de procesamiento y como biocombustible.
