Surgical Site Deep Infections Incidence at Arco Iris Hospital - La Paz, from 2008 to 2013

Surgical site infections are the most common in patients undergoing surgery, and some hospitals are among the highest incidence of nosocomial infections. They increase morbidity and mortality of patients and care costs. Its genesis is a complex process in which environmental factors of the host, operating room, surgery itself and the microorganisms interact in such a way that allow its development. This study was retrospective and descriptive, held at the Arco Iris Hospital La Paz, Bolivia. Epidemiological data of nosocomial surgical site infections were reviewed from 2008 to 2013. The total number of infection cases at the surgical site between 2008 and 2013 with positive cultures, was 24 cases. Important factors were recognized when preventing surgical site infections, as appropriate perioperative antimicrobial prophylaxis, monitor patient normothermia during his hospital stay, proper skin preparation and good surgical technique.
