Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) with a level above 95% causes a decrease in viral load (VL) to be undetectable. Several studies showed that undetectable VL reduces the risk of HIV transmission and is the cornerstone of the strategy to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
A VL that remains detectable or increasing implies that the person has Iow adherence to antiretroviral therapy or presents resistance, which determines the presence of opportunistic infections. The main objective of the study was to determine the efficacy of therapeutic education model (TE) on adherence to antiretroviral therapy to reach undetectable VL in patients treated at the Institute for Human Development (IDH).
This was a longitudinal, quantitative, descriptive and analytical study, using a prospective cohort for monitoring patients on ART, with VL receiving or not TE at ID H from 2013 to 2015.
lt was developed with people attending the outpatient clinic, who received TE sessions and others who did not receive them. 44 people were interviewed. 95,4% of people who participated in the process of TE, reached an undetectable viral load (p<0,001). The results showed the importance of the methodology to achieve an undetectable VL.
