The orthodontic treatment necessity index was developed in the United Kingdom by Brook and Shaw in 1989. T his index prioritizes and classifies malocclusions according to treatment needs.
A descriptive, transversal and observational research was carried out with the objective of determining the degree of malocclusion and the need for orthodontic treatment in patients of the Specialty of Orthodontics of the Universidad Autónoma de Nayarit from 2014 to 2017, where 202 orthodontic pretreatment study models were evaluated from the clinic of the university with a Mitutoyo digital caliper, a computer and a Microsoft Office Excel program to tabulate information and perform descriptive statistics.
The results shows that in dental health component the average was 2,51 ± 1.07 (84,3 % needed some type of orthodontic treatment). The aesthetic component average was 4,9 ± 2,54 and only 45,61 % needed orthodontics. Regarding the component of dental health, 83,51 % of women and 85,14 % of men needed some type of orthodontic treatment. However with the aesthetic component in women only 44,33 % and 48,65 % in men needed some type of orthodontic treatment.
lt is concluded that there is is a greater need for orthodontic treatment when using the dental health component than when using the aesthetic component. Men presented a greater need for orthodontic treatment than women when evaluated with both indexes.
