Ontogenetically, the shape of the female pelvis, unlike the male, allows the passage of the product of conception to term, producing labor; eutocic delivery, and thus, the perpetuation of the species. This phenomenon has existed since man populated the earth, and whose process has been controlled for a long time through oral tradition. Then, in all maternity wards in the world, annotations of the variables were made, until a modern instrument called PARTOGRAPH, which allows graphing the entire evolution of labor, from the dilation of the cervix, descent of the fetal head and to all other variables related to it, such as intensity, frequency of uterine contractions, fetal and maternal heart rate, blood pressure, fluids and treatments administered. All this graphed on a single sheet, which allows, visually, giving us a complete idea of what is happening with that labor.
The history of the partograph in the Trujillo Regional Teaching Hospital is described, from its creation to the present, and whose dissemination and correct application could allow, among other things, two important facts: 1. Reduce the rate of caesarean sections; and 2. reduce intrapartum fetal distress. The evolution of the partograph is described, and in the latest model of this, the close relationship between Anatomy [uterus (power), fetus (passenger), pelvis (passage)], and Physiology (latent phase, Phase active primary and active secondary phase) fully fulfills the premise: The function makes the organ.
