Instructions for Authors

Introduction

Thank you for considering the Journal of Latin American Sciences and Culture (JLASC) for the publication of your research. The following guidelines outline the submission and publication process to ensure your manuscript meets the journal's format, ethical, and scholarly standards. Adherence to these instructions will facilitate efficient peer review, production, and timely publication.

About the Journal

The Journal of Latin American Sciences and Culture (JLASC) is an international, peer-reviewed, Open Access journal dedicated to publishing high-quality original research across its specified focus areas (see Aims & Scope). Open Access ensures immediate, free online availability of published articles, maximizing visibility, readership, and citation potential. JLASC accepts submissions in English and Spanish. Chinese translations of the Version of Record (VoR) are also welcomed.

Accepted Article Types: Original Articles, Review Articles, Literature Reviews, Book Reviews, Comments, Opinions, Letters, News, and Podcasts.

Article Processing Charge (APC)

To support the costs of administration, peer review, professional copy-editing, typesetting, and long-term digital preservation, JLASC levies an Article Processing Charge (APC) of US $600. This fee enables publication under a Creative Commons license. APC waivers may be requested based on demonstrated need and will be evaluated by the Publisher and Editors on a case-by-case basis.

Peer Review and Ethics

JLASC, under the auspices of Universidad Privada del Valle, upholds the highest standards of publication ethics and integrity. Submissions deemed suitable are subject to a rigorous double-blind peer review process by independent, anonymous experts in the relevant field.

Preparing Your Manuscript

Structure
Manuscripts should be organized in the following order:

  1. Title Page

  2. Abstract

  3. Keywords

  4. Main Text (Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion)

  5. Acknowledgments

  6. Declaration of Interest Statement

  7. References

  8. Appendices (if applicable)

  9. Tables (each on a separate page with captions)

  10. Figures

  11. Figure Captions (as a list)

Word Limits

  • Original Articles & Literature Reviews: Maximum 7,000 words (including abstract, references, tables, and figure captions).

  • Book Reviews: 350 words per book (covering 2-4 books).

Format-Free Submission
Initial submissions may be in Word (.doc/.docx), RTF, ODT, or PDF format. Figures and tables may be embedded within the text or submitted as separate files. All visual material must be of sufficient resolution to permit assessment during review.

Author Checklist
Please ensure your submission includes the following:

  1. Author Details: Full names and institutional affiliations of all authors on the title page. The corresponding author must be clearly identified with an email address. Authors are encouraged to provide ORCID iDs and to hyphenate surnames for accurate bibliographic indexing.

  2. Abstract: An unstructured abstract (max. 200 words) in English, Spanish, or Chinese.

  3. Keywords: 3-5 keywords.

  4. Funding Statement: Full grant details must be provided (e.g., "This work was supported by the [Funding Agency] under Grant [number]").

  5. Disclosure Statement: Any potential financial conflicts of interest.

  6. Biographical Note: A brief note (max. 200 words) for each author.

  7. Data Availability Statement: If applicable, detail where supporting data can be accessed (e.g., repository link, DOI).

  8. Data Deposition: Authors are encouraged to deposit data in a recognized repository and provide the persistent identifier (e.g., DOI) upon submission.

  9. Supplemental Material: Files for online-only publication (e.g., datasets, translations, multimedia) should be prepared according to journal specifications.

  10. Figures & Tables: High-resolution figures (preferred formats: EPS, TIFF, JPEG; 300 DPI for color, 600 DPI for grayscale, 1200 DPI for line art) and editable tables in separate files. All tables should be self-explanatory.

  11. Units: Use SI units (non-italicized).

Using Third-Party Material
Authors are responsible for obtaining written permission to reproduce any copyrighted material (text, figures, tables) not covered by fair use/dealing provisions. Evidence of permission must be provided upon submission.

Submitting Your Manuscript

All submissions must be made through the Editorial Manager online system. New users must create an account. All manuscripts are screened for originality using Crossref Similarity Check. There are no submission fees.

Data Sharing Policy

JLASC encourages open data sharing where ethically and legally permissible. Authors are urged to deposit datasets in a certified repository that provides a persistent identifier (e.g., DOI). Data sets are not peer-reviewed; authors retain full responsibility for their integrity and accuracy.

Copyright and Licensing

Authors retain copyright of their work. By submitting, authors grant JLASC the right of first publication under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. This allows broad dissemination and reuse with proper attribution. All translation versions are protected by the copyright of the original Version of Record.

Post-Acceptance and Publication

  • Funding Compliance: JLASC will assist with depositing accepted manuscripts in required institutional or funder repositories upon author request.

  • Author Access: Corresponding authors receive access to their article's metrics (downloads, citations, Altmetric data) via our publishing platform.

  • Article Reprints: Reprints may be ordered through the production system. Inquiries should be directed to editorial@journalasc.org.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Authors who publish in this journal accept the following conditions:

The authors retain the copyright and assign to the journal the right of the first publication, with the work registered with the Creative Commons 4.0 attribution license, which allows third parties to use what is published as long as they mention the authorship of the work and the first publication in this journal.


Authors may make other independent and additional contractual agreements for the non-exclusive distribution of the version of the article published in this journal (e.g., include it in an institutional repository or publish it in a book provided that they clearly indicate that the work it was first published in this magazine.

Authors are allowed and encouraged to share their work online (for example: in institutional repositories or personal web pages) before and during the manuscript submission process, as it can lead to productive exchanges, more and more quick citation of published work.
