Pulpotomy is the surgical removal of the cameral pulp, leaving the radicular pulp free of inflammation and in which the medication is left and where the ophthalmic ointment is put on; containing a wide spectrum antibiotic as an alternative method to formocresol whose actions are: fixation with progressive fibrosis, bactericidal and causes changes in calcification.
An experimental, prospective, longitudinal and analytical research work was conducted with the objective of determining the effectiveness of the implementation of an ophthalmic ointment, replacing the formocresol, in pulpotomy of 50 pediatric patients from 3 to 9 years old who came for dental care to the dental clinic and dental bus of Univalle during 2012.
The conventional pulpotomy technique was performed with the subsequent chamber pulp removal and bleeding control; a unique ophthalmic ointment approx. of 0.5 grs. was applied, previously at the entrance of the radicular canals, and subsequently a dressing of zinc oxide eugenol was applied covering the whole pulp chamber.
In order to see the effectiveness of the ophthalmic ointment periapical radiographs of the 50 patients were taken in a period of 30 and 60 days after the application of the ointment. The results showed us that there were no radiographic changes indicating necrosis or periapical processes and clinically painful symptoms were not presented. These results were similar to those of the UASLP that were performed in México. This shows a 100% of effectiveness of the ophthalmic ointment in the treatment of pulpotomy instead of formocresol.
