Celiac disease is a chronic enteropathy of the small intestine mucosa caused by gluten intolerance, which results in villous atrophy, malabsorption and clinical symptoms that can manifest in childhood and in adults. Serological tests allow diagnosis. Duodenal biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosis. A retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out on 86 patients from the gastroenterology office at the Univalle Hospital - Cochabamba, 2016 - 2019, determining the serological tests (EMA, tTGA and antigliadin) and high endoscopy. Observing greater positivity of celiac disease in females than males, and remains undiagnosed in a significant proportion of individuals, these tests are not requested daily. Therefore, it is difficult to establish the real frequency of this disease.
The prevalence data found in this study confirm that celiac disease is a public health problem in the country. Among the regions with the highest prevalence (up to 1% of the total population), are Europe and the USA, where food is based on gluten-free foods. At the Univalle Hospital during the 2016-2019 efforts, 19.912 patients were treated, with a prevalence of 0,05%, with a low prevalence in our country, due to the lack of studies and the clinic.
