Introduction: Gastrointestinal manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea are common. Intestinal pneumatosis, characterized by multiple cysts on the intestinal wall, is a condition rarely associated with SLE and closely related to disease activity.
Methods: A bibliographic search was carried out in databases such as PubMed, Nature, Elsevier and Google Scholar, with keywords such as "intestinal pneumatosis" ̈lupus enteritis ̈. For the presentation of the case, data were taken from a medical history.
Case presentation: Female patient known by the service for a history of surgery for intestinal obstruction, where she returns again due to a clinical picture of more or less 6 days of poor general condition with hypotension 80/50 mm/Hg that does not improve with the administration of crystalloids, so admission to intensive therapy with the need for vasopressors is indicated, consultation is performed with surgery where it is decided to perform an exploratory laparoscopy ruled out intestinal vascular involvement and finally initiation of corticosteroids. The patient is discharged to general wards in good condition with oral diet.
Conclusion: Intestinal pneumatosis due to lupus enteritis is one of the rare manifestations with non-specific symptoms where it is necessary to have a timely diagnosis and treatment. Giving a good response to corticosteroids and avoiding unnecessary surgical interventions.
Key words: lupus erythematosus, lupus enteritis, intestinal pneumatosis
