Theoretical Foundations of the Role Played by Trade Liberalization in the Formation of the European Union.

Using a qualitative methodology, this article analyzes the theoretical foundations of the European Union, also from a historical perspective. After the failure in the attempts to unify the Old Continent based on political criteria, only the functionalist model, which prioritizes the economic over the rest of the competences, it has allowed the success that the integration process has recognized to date. Therefore, the economic theories that best explain this phenomenon will be analyzed, and some of the keys to understand the role that trade has played as a catalyst for this integrative process and the place that will be provided through statistical data The EU occupies the world as an economic power and, especially, as a commercial block.
