In an international context such as the current one, in which protectionist impulses are once again at their ease, it is convenient to take a retrospective look at those economic theories that advocate greater trade liberalization as a model of economic growth. From the classical economist and their predecessors (Adam Smith and David Ricardo, among others) to the models raised in the twentieth century (Heckscher-Ohlin or Stolper-Samuelson), through certain defenders of protectionism, this article attempts to analyze the benefits derived from commercial activity enunciated by the various theories to proceed to their incorporation in economic policy decisions and, more specifically, in commercial policy -both at home and abroad- implemented by the different countries or commercial blocks.
