This article describes the electronic system development for acquiring and processing vital signs far patient monitoring. These are pulse rate, body temperature and respiratory rate; additionally, there is the visualization of the plethysmographic curve obtained by optical means.
Obtaining pulse rate was made indirectly through the techniques of plethysmography to measure changes in blood flow resulting from the activity performed by the heart. Body temperature was obtained with a temperature sensor in contact with the skin. Finally, a breathing frequency was obtained by a properly connected to a nostril temperature sensor; calculation was made by the change in temperature between the exhaled and inhaled air at a given time. The implementation of the system is capable of monitoring these parameters, and the plethysmographic waveform display, which are represented by means of an interface to a personal computer where the results are displayed on the monitor, referring to this as a monitor of vital signs.
