The Paris Agreement and the establishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have prompted the countries that signed these agreements to invest in research and development of clean energy generation alternatives and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. One of the strategies for this transition is energy harvesting in urban production systems, where wind energy stands out due to its design flexibility and adaptability. In this regard, this work designs and builds a Banki Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) for urban energy harvesting. To this end, the optimal design parameters (number of blades, attack angle of the blade, and height-to-diameter ratio) suggested in a previous study made by the same research group, first verified through numerical simulations. Subsequently, the influence of the blade profile, a parameter that had not been previously considered, is analyzed. Based on the angular velocity results obtained for the different blade profiles, a final wind turbine design was arrived at. Finally, a prototype for the VAWT was built, which, in tests, reached speeds of up to 600 RPM and was able to generate a voltage difference of up to 100 mV. Furthermore, the importance of the incidence angle of wind on the rotation of the wind turbine was experimentally verified.
