Green or Just? Implications of this dilemma for the energy transition: case studies from Bolivia

This article focuses on debates surrounding the notion of energy transition, with particular emphasis on the tensions between environmental sustainability and social justice. Based on the analysis of productive enterprises located in Bolivia—selected as case studies within the framework of the GENERIS project—it examines, from an intersectional perspective, how these tensions manifest in activities that incorporate renewable energy generation systems. The objective is to identify, from the fieldwork conducted, key dimensions of this issue that contribute to a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities for building a socially inclusive and environmentally responsible energy transition.
The research is based on a qualitative methodology, using semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation carried out in three productive enterprises. These cases are used to analyse how structural inequalities—intersected by gender, class, ethnicity, age, and place of residence—shape access to and participation in energy transition processes.
